The Art of Writing

I read a lot, writing sometimes. As writing comes in different forms for different purposes, can we consider writing as an art?

I like short forms of art. Novels and short movies are my kinds of reading. Of course, there are “regular” forms, but I dislike three-hour movies, for example, but I admire extended reading.

Medium.com is my source for a short reading, but we all consider ourselves writers here.

What I noticed lately (I just thought of that before) is that some articles here got nothing to do with art. I found hundreds of “articles,” including short novels, crime stories, love stories, self-expression, etc. Pure in their form, shape, and purpose. It will stay an art without an expiration date.

A few days ago, I noticed one particular article. What made me wonder about it is that the complete article is obsolete. It was written in 2017 and talks about some technical stuff. Can I call that art?

I don’t think so. But what, in that case, is the purpose of medium.com? I don’t see it clearly. There is a lot of hype about GPT (among the other stuff), and articles will become obsolete in months. They will be worth nothing. From an art point of view, they are worthless.

Many articles are their opinion, nothing more, nothing else. Many of them are pseudojournalistic as authors must be more competent and experienced in their writing.

One particular thing we got is publications. They are almost monopolistic and do not give access to writers because of money. Of course, every work has to be rewarded in some way but writing only for earning is a job, not an art.

Throughout civilization, art was continuously funded by different institutions or governments. I support such an approach, but the metric was utterly other. The metric was not the number of readers or listeners but someone who decided whether something was worth it. Of course, it could be a better system.

The art, as such, has to be subventioned. It depends from country to country how they implement a system of subvention.

Is this article art? No, not at all. It is a notice on observation. I write it for writing and not art. Do I deserve money for that? No, I do not. Super simple.

I will continue writing about whatever I want, but here, on medium.com, writing is not art. What is art here is that it engages thousands of authors to express themselves, write, and create. And as such, it has to exist and be here for us. Do we have to be thankful for that? No. We are paying for that. It is worth that much for anyone. Every individual on the planet can find something for themselves. Is there something we should do to preserve some articles written here? No. They will be gone at some point.

Art with an expiration date.

Writing, ranting, reading, having fun; all the time. I don't care about rules or deadlines. I express myself the way I want. I write ransom notes for money.
